Situations in which renal biopsy is not advised include:

  • small, shrunken kidneys
  • obstructed kidneys
  • kidneys with significant discrepancy in size and function as assessed by radionuclide studies
  • uncontrolled hypertension
  • coagulation defects for example, thrombocytopenia
  • reflux nephropathy
  • acute urinary tract infection
