Physiological haemostasis is the natural mechanism by which haemorrhage is stopped. It involves the interaction of:

  • platelet adhesion, activation and aggregation
  • fibrin formation via the coagulation cascade
  • vascular contraction

Each is considered seperately in the submenu, but it is important to emphasise that there is vital overlap.

Blood coagulation can result from either or both of activation of platelets and the coagulation cascade.
