It is a testosterone derivative which:

  • suppresses LH surge
  • inhibits ovarian steroidogenesis
  • reduces plasma levels of sex hormone binding globulin
  • increases free testosterone - due to reduced SHBG

Danazol may be used in the treatment of endometriosis. It results in a high androgen, low oestrogen environment which does not support the growth of endometriosis. Therapy is for 6-9 months.

It has also been used in the prophylaxis of hereditary angioneurotic oedema.
