Malnutrition related diabetes can be divided into three types:

  • J type (Jamaica)
  • K type (Kerala)
  • Z type (Zudeima)

Malnutrition and consumption of cassava are thought to be aetiological factors in this type of diabetes which is characterised by:

  • history of malnutrition
  • found only in tropical countries
  • common association with pancreatic fibrosis and calculi
  • often severe insulin resistance with moderate reduction in insulin secretion
