This depends on the form of contraception used before the procedure.

Women should be advised to use contraception at least up to the day of the operation. If methods of contraception are used which do not prevent ovulation e.g. IUCD, then contraception should be employed until menstruation occurs because there may be an ovum already within the uterus.

The patient should be informed of the possible side effects of the procedure.
