The cover-uncover test involves the patient fixating on an object, one eye is then covered and a refixation movement is looked for in the other - uncovered - eye. The other eye is then tested in the same way. If, during either manoeuvre, there is a movement of the unoccluded eye, then that eye must have been squinting before the fellow eye was uncovered, ie a manifest squint is present.
