Lymphatics

The diaphragm is supplied by a number of fine lymphatic vessels which converge near its superior surface. Then these ascend to superior lymph nodes:

  • parasternal nodes
  • lateral anteroinferior mediastinal or middle phrenic nodes
  • posterior mediastinal lymph nodes
  • lumbar lymph nodes, a continuation of the posterior intercostal chain

The communication permits ready dissemination of infection and malignancy. For example, a subphrenic abscess may be associated with a 'sympathetic' effusion.
