The aim of treatment is to improve the disability that results from parkinsonian tremor. Patients may need support and reassurance as they may be distressed by the tremor.

Management includes:

  • altering / eliminating causes of tremor such as drugs
  • advise to carry a newspaper or handbag under the arm - this can reduce the tremor
  • anticholinergic drugs are more successful than L dopa when tremor is the main problem
  • dopaminergic drugs such as levodopa - when the patient also has rigidity dopaminergic drugs would normally be considered before the anticholinergics
