Platelet-derived growth factor is a peptide cytokine produced from:

  • platelets
  • mononuclear phagocytes
  • endothelial cells
  • epithelial cells

Its present known in vitro functions include:

  • increased phagocytosis
  • increased neutrophil oxidative killing
  • stimulation of the division of fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells
  • increased secretion of metalloproteinases with a role in tissue repair
  • stimulation of chemotaxis for monocytes and granulocytes
