Compounds which may cause goitre include:

  • lithium carbonate
  • phenylbutazone
  • excess iodine
  • foods - including cabbage, cassava, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, turnips; but must represent a substantial part of the diet to be clinically significant
  • calcium and fluorides in the water supply
