After the skin, subcutaneous fat and membranous layer of superfical fascia have been incised, the next layer encountered is the aponeurosis of the external oblique muscle. It is gently incised at one point with a scalpel. Through the incision, dissecting scissors are passed and these are run in the direction of the fibres of the aponeurosis for the entire length of the wound.
The fibres of internal oblique should be revealed as this plane is opened up.
