Risk factors for the development of a urinary tract infection:
- diabetes mellitus
- pregnancy
- impaired voiding of the bladder
- genitourinary malformation
- prostatic hypertrophy
- renal stones
Risk factors for asymptomatic bacteriuria in women include (1)
- being sexually active
- increasing age
- concomitant diabetes
- institutionalised patients
- presence of a catheter
