Other conditions which may result in symptoms similar to bladder outflow obstruction include:

  • urinary tract infection
  • polyuria
    • diabetes mellitus
    • hypercalcaemia
    • diuretics
    • chronic renal failure
    • increase in atrial natiuretic factor: may occur at night in mild heart failure
  • bladder instability
  • intravesical lesions e.g. stones, tumour
  • functional polyuria - excess fluid intake
