Aetiology
Velopharyngeal insufficiency has varied causes:
- structural
- neurological
- behavioural
However, there may be overlap between classes eg:
- velocardiofacial syndrome is associated with a submucous cleft palate and reduced innervation by the facial nerve
- neurological impairment resulting in hypoplasia of the soft palate
