Urethral dilatation

Sequential urethral dilatation is the traditional treatment for urethral stricture.

The simplest method is to pass metal sounds of increasing diameter through the stricture to expand it.

Should this prove difficult, filiforms and followers may be used. The filiform is a fine probe placed through the stricture; followers are larger dilators attached to the external end of the filiform that are sequentially passed along it and through the stricture.

Dilatation is successful in 50-60% of cases.

Possible complications include:

  • creation of false passages
  • introduction of infection
