Sickle cell crises (haemolytic)
These crises may not be a distinct entity but in many patients with painful crises or infection there is an increased rate of haemolysis and a worsening of anaemia.
There is profound anaemia (Hb 3-4 g/100 ml) with low haptoglobin and raised unconjugated bilirubin.
