Clinically, the functions of the rhomboids can be checked only grossly:

  • observation: paralysis of rhomboid minor results in the vertebral border of the scapula being more displaced laterally than its counterpart on the opposite side
  • palpation:
    • the patient is instructed to place his hands in the small of his back, pushing both elbows back - this negates the effect of trapezius
    • the rhomboids may be palpated at the level of the spine of the scapula on the medial side of the vertebral border of the scapula
