The rhomboid muscles act together as a functional unit to:

  • retract the scapula, in conjunction with trapezius contraction
  • elevate the medial border of the scapula superiorly and medially; trapezius is the antagonist for this movement
  • stabilise the scapula when other muscle groups are active
