The posterior spinal artery is one of the major arterial vessels to the spinal cord. It usually arises from the posterior inferior cerebellar arteries and forms a plexus on the dorsal surface of the spinal cord.
Twelve unpaired radicular arteries join the plexus. This rich collateral supply protects the dorsal surface of the cord from the effects of vascular disease.
The posterior spinal artery supplies the posterior one - third of the cord including the posterior columns.
