Pelvis (female)

The typical pelvic brim of a UK female is slightly wider in its transverse than its AP diameter (gynaecoid). The pelvic cavity has contours of a curved cylinder rather than a funnel with the sides being approximately parallel.

The pelvic outlet boundary passes from the symphysis pubis, down the inferior rami of the pubic bones to the ischial tuberosities. It then passes obliquely upwards and posterior along the sacrotuberous ligaments to the tip of the fifth sacral vertebra. At the pelvic outlet the AP diameter is greater than the transverse diameter.

There is typically an obtuse greater sciatic notch (angle greater than 90 degrees). The subpubic angle is typically also greater than 90 degrees.
