  • cranial nerve nuclei:
    • oculomotor nerve and Edinger - Westphal nuclei - at level of superior colliculus; third nerve emerges from the ventral aspect of the midbrain (between the cerebral peduncles)
    • trochlear nerve - at the level of the inferior colliculus; emerges dorsally
  • other relations in the midbrain:
    • red nucleus - in the midbrain at level of superior colliculi
    • substantia nigra - lies immediately behind the cerebral peduncles of the midbrain
