A leukaemoid reaction is an huge rise in absolute leukocyte numbers - greater than 40 * 10^9 per litre - usually due to profound inflammation. The phrase describes leukocyte numbers nearing or equal to those in leukaemia. Indeed, leukocytes may show inflammatory blast formation due to excessive numbers of immature cells being produced by inflammation; blood smear differentiation from leukaemia is often difficult.
