Lagophthalmos

Lagophthalmos describes difficulty in complete closure of the eyelid over the eyeball.

Causes of lagophthalmos include:

  • exophthalmos
  • an impairment of mechanical closure of the lids e.g. burns of the eyelids
  • paralysis of orbicularis oculi
  • leprosy

This condition may result in corneal ulceration and keratitis.

Treatment:

  • lubrication of eyes
  • temporary tarsorrhaphy may be required if corneal ulceration develops
