The vertical muscles are one of the intrinsic group of tongue muscles. They arise in the fibrous tissue of the dorsum of the tongue. They pass inferolaterally to insert into the lateral mucous membrane of the tongue.
The vertical muscles act to increase the broaden and increase the length of the tongue.
