Intermittent self-dilatation

Authoring team

Intermittent self-dilatation (ISD) may be used following urethrotomy in an attempt to reduce stricture recurrence.

Lofric catheters - semi-stiff catheters with a hydrophilic coating that produce self-lubrication in the presence of water - are passed to keep the stricture patent. Initially, self-dilatation is performed twice weekly with review according to progress.

ISD is well tolerated. The main drawback is it's potential to create false passages.
