Hyoglossus is one of the muscles of the tongue. It arises from the superior border of the body and greater cornu of the hyoid bone. It inserts into the side and inferior aspect of the tongue.
Hyoglossus is innervated by the hypoglossal nerve (CN XII).
The muscle acts to depress the lateral sides of the tongue inferiorly. Also, it weakly retracts the protracted tongue.
