High fibre diet may exacerbate IBS

Authoring team

It is a common experience that patients with irritable bowel syndrome have tried to remedy their condition by increasing their dietary intake of fibre with fruit and All-bran etc

These do seem to exacerbate IBS considerably and so Mebeverine and Ispaghula Husk are now the standard treatment

It is worth warning patients not to increase their fibre intake in other ways until well settled on this medical regimen
