Possible extra-articular features of BJHS include:

  • features that may be present include mitral valve prolapse (though aortic valvular involvement is more suggestive of Marfan's syndrome) and varicose veins
  • Raynaud's phenomenon is common - however it is prudent to exclude autoimmune causes of this condition before attributing it entirely to hypermobility
  • herniae can occur at the umbilicus and in the inguinal region
  • associated features also includerectal and uterine prolapse may occur as well as cystocele and rectocele
  • in pregnancy, laxity increases and premature rupture of membranes may occur
  • spontaneous pneumothorax may occur and there is a tendency to asthma
