The burning mouth syndrome is difficult to manage. The patient complains of a burning mouth or tongue without any visible abnormality. This complaint may occur in an anaemic or preanaemic state, so the patient should be investigated haematologically. If this is normal, a psychogenic cause, particularly a masked depression, should also be considered as a possible cause for the presenting symptoms.
Despite investigation there will be some patients who retain their complaint but remain in good physical health.
