Bulbospongiosus in the male arises from the:

  • perineal body posteriorly
  • midline raphe over corpus spongiosum
  • inferior fascia of urogenital diaphragm laterally

It inserts into the dorsum and lateral borders of the penile bulb.

Bulbospongiosus acts to:

  • empty the urethra of urine or ejaculate
  • facilitate penile erection
