The axilla or 'armpit' to the layperson, is the pyramidal-shaped space between the upper arm and the thorax. It is the route of vessels and nerves passing between the neck and the arm. Structurally, it can be divided into an apex, a base and four walls.
Examination of the axilla is of clinical importance particularly in the context of metastasis of malignancy of the breast to regional lymph nodes.
