3,4-diaminopyridine

3,4-diaminopyridine is a drug that:

  • increases acetycholine release from the nerve terminals
  • blocks potassium conductance, prolonging the action potential at the nerve terminal, and increasing acetylcholine release

  • side effects include:
    • headache
    • fatigue
    • perioral and/or distal paraesthesia 30-60 minutes after a dose
    • difficulty in sleeping
    • excessive dosage can lead to seizures

  • it is contraindicated in epilepsy
