This is heterotopic ossification in the muscles that sometimes occurs after an injury. This condition particularly occurs after dislocation of the elbow or a blow to the brachialis, deltoid or quadriceps.

This condition is thought to be due to muscle damage. However it also occurs without a local injury in unconscious or paraplegic patients.
