This type of injury is common and is reduced by pulling in the line of the joint. The finger should then be held flexed and loosely strapped to a neighbour for a few days. Early mobilisation is encouraged.
Not infrequently, the head of the phalanx may dislocate between the tendons of superficialis longus. The finger is deformed in a "swan-neck" position requiring open reduction.
