Treatment

Authoring team

An undisplaced crack fracture can be treated by applying a protective cast so that the patient can walk with minimum support.

If the injury is a compression fracture then the treatment may involve attempted restoration of the talocalcaneal joint. This fracture may also be treated 'functionally' where no attempt is made to restore the joint and instead any deformity is accepted and movement is encouraged so that the fragments can mould to a congruent fit with the talus. Regular exercises of the foot and ankle joints are necessary in order to reduce the likelihood of residual joint stiffness.
