In relative order of frequency, burns in adults tend to be caused by the following agents:

  • explosion and flames; e.g. house fires
  • scalds from oil or water; e.g. car radiator in young adult, hot bath in elderly
  • direct contact with hot surface
  • electrical burns
  • chemical burns
  • friction burns
  • sunburn
