Acute peritoneal dialysis
Acute or temporary peritoneal dialysis may be used in:
- acute renal failure - the dialysis being performed continuously or intermittently until renal function improves
- chronic renal failure - as a holding measure until more permanent dialysis can be instigated
Relative contraindications:
- recent abdominal surgery
- hypercatabolism - patients require haemodialysis
