Acute peritoneal dialysis

Acute or temporary peritoneal dialysis may be used in:

  • acute renal failure - the dialysis being performed continuously or intermittently until renal function improves
  • chronic renal failure - as a holding measure until more permanent dialysis can be instigated

Relative contraindications:

  • recent abdominal surgery
  • hypercatabolism - patients require haemodialysis
