Tranylcypromine is a non-hydrazine derivative MAOI which in addition to MAOI properties has a direct amphetamine-like stimulant effect. It is less hepatotoxic than phenalzine but more likely to produce hypertensive crises. It is often used in combination with trifluoperazine.
Note that some patients become dependent on the stimulant effect so it should be prescribed with caution.
