Lateral is an adjective used to describe a point further away from the median plane in the anatomical position. For example, the eye is lateral to the nose.
For the limbs in relation to the long axis in the anatomical position, lateral is synonymous with radial in the arm and fibular in the leg.
Lateral should be contrasted with medial.
