Dry gangrene

Authoring team

Dry gangene occurs when the tissues are dessicated by a gradual slowing of their blood supply, typically occuring in a limb which is chronically ischaemic due to atherosclerosis. The necrotic tissue becomes black, dry, wrinkled and greasy to touch. There is a clearly defined line of separation between the dead and viable tissue. Infection is minimal.

Eventually the necrotic area seperates from the viable tissue and skin slowly heals the defect.
