Bronchoalveolar lavage
Bronchoalveolar lavage provides samples from the lower respiratory tract for:
- assessment of the inflammatory cell population
- microbiology
- cytology
Technique and indications are outlined below.
Possible complications include:
- fever (transient)
- hypoxia
- rarely infection may occur
- a transient CXR shadow may be seen
