Conditions causing an encroachment of the pharynx
Factors which predispose to sleep apnoea by encroachment of the pharynx include:
- acromegaly
- small jaw and retrognagthia
- enlarged tonsils
- obesity - fat flattens the pharynx and muscle tone is reduced by fat infiltration
