Obstructive chronic pyelonephritis
Obstruction of the urinary tract results in:
- increased back-pressure on the kidneys
- increased frequency of urinary tract infections
Both of these factors cause recurrent episodes of renal inflammation, scarring and parenchymal atrophy.
Obstructive chronic pyelonephritis may be bilateral or unilateral:
- bilateral disease may be caused by congenital abnormalities of the urethra e.g. posterior urethral valves
- causes of unilateral disease include:
- ureteric obstruction
- renal stones
