  • blood tests - FBC; ESR; U+Es; LFTs; CRP; immunoglobulins; serum electrophoresis; complement (C3,C4); autoantibodies - antinuclear antibody (ANA), antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA), anti-double stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA), anti-glomerular basement membrane (anti-GBM); HBsAg; antiHCV; anti-streptolysin O titre (ASOT); blood culture
  • urine analysis, microscopy (red cell casts - may also be dysmorphic red cells) and culture
  • urine collection - 24 hour collection for creatinine clearance and protein excretion
  • radiological investigation - renal ultrasound, chest Xray
  • renal biopsy
