Focal segmental glomerulonephritis

Authoring team

As the name suggests, this type of glomerulonephritis is characterized by:

  • focal lesions - only discrete areas of the kidney are involved
  • segmental lesions - only segments of each affected glomerulus are involved

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and idiopathic focal glomerulonephritis with mesangial deposits of IgA are subtypes of focal segmental glomerulonephritis.
