SSRIs and suicide

A systematic review examined the association between suicide attempts and selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). (1) The authors concluded that there was a documented association between suicide attempts and the use of SSRIs. However the authors also observed several major methodological limitations in the published trials and with the difficulty in determining whether suicidality stems from an SSRI or an underlying depression.

The evidence of an association seems stronger in adolescents and young people than in adults. (2)
