Causes
These may include:
- the child may not be tired because of too much sleep in the afternoon
- the child may not wish to go to sleep because of over- excitement or over-stimulation before bed
- the child may not be sleepy because of sleeping late in the morning, thus having a displaced sleep pattern. In this case the child is having sufficient sleep despite going to sleep later than the parents would wish
- normal separation anxiety - the child may be frightened of being left alone or abandoned
- the child may be anxious because of noises in the dark or because of noises heard from downstairs
- the child may be confused of what is expected of him/her. For example the child may be put to bed by his mother but knows that his/her father, who has yet to arrive home, is pleased to see him/her.
