Section 5(4) allows detention of a patient by nursing staff - a Registered Mental Nurse - for a duration of up to 6 hours while the doctor is found. The nurse must record the time of detention on a specific form and also indicate that the patient is a potential danger to himself or to others and that a doctor was not immediately available to implement Section 5(2).
