Psychotherapy (supportive)

Authoring team

Supportive psychotherapy draws on the supportive aspects of the therapist-patient relationship to maintain effective coping in patients whose level of psychological functioning is precarious. It is palliative form of treatment in which the doctor attempts to make the patient able to bear their problems better rather than treat the cause of the problems.

In this form of psychotherapy the patient is encouraged to talk about their problems eg guilt, anger.
