This is the study of abnormal states of mind. There are three approaches.

  • phenomenological psychopathology:
    • is concerned with the objective description of abnormal states of mind avoiding pre-conceived theories

  • experimental psychopathology:
    • originates from psychoanalytical investigation, and after description of a mental state it attempts to explain the causes of abnormal mental events by postulating unconcious mental processes

  • experimental psychopathology:
    • refers to the investigation of abnormal phenomena by inducing a change in one phenomenon and observing associated changes in others
    • may also refer to the study of animal learning and behavioral responses
